Why Stock plans?
Why modern home plans?
A quick guide to the site
Why Stock plans? Stock home plans is not an area of practice that most architects care to get involved in. Stock plans have a reputation for uninspired design, and as often as not are designed by people without formal architectural education or legal architectural credentials. The cookie cutter designs look like much of the same old houses that are being built across the country. That is a critical view because even though most of the designs are ordinary, stock plans are a good value to the consumer costing a fraction of the price of hiring an architect. The biggest problem that architects have with stock plans is that there is not much architecture there. Architects believe in each situation warranting a unique design solution, which is completely contradictory to stock designs. More recently some architects have changed their view and have advocated the sale of plans from past projects done for individual clients as stock plans. This is seen as an easy way to create a selection of plans to sell from good work that would otherwise collect dust in a drawer. Overall the practice has been advocated as a way to bring better design to more people.
Why modern home plans? We have always
favored modern/contemporary design for residential architecture, but the
day to day life of a small architectural practice on the east coast does
not encounter many clients interested in this kind of design. Experience
shows that most people are interested in traditional homes. The success
of Dwell Magazine has made us think differently about this. Dwell is a relatively new magazine, launched in 2001, dedicated to modern homes. It is a cross between an architectural journal and a home magazine covering issues from architecture to furnishings and shopping. Judging from Dwell's circulation it turns out there are hundreds of thousands of people like you who prefer modern design, they are educated, they are interested in art and design, and many of them would love a home of unusual design and materials. But unless they can afford to hire an architect and design one from scratch, or are lucky enough to find an existing modern house, or creative enough to make their own, well... they are out of luck. Developers building new modern homes are very rare. Well then, how about stock plans for modern homes? We did an exhaustive internet search for modern home plans in 2002, and we found nothing available.
Our mission is to fill the void in the house plan marketplace by offering modern home designs. Our designs are flexible and allow different people to use them in different ways. It is possible to build our designs with conventional methods familiar to any builder, or to introduce unique materials. If you always wanted a modern home, but thought a custom design was beyond your reach, then we think you may really like what you find here. We don't know of anything else like it.
A quick guide to the site:
Plans:
This is our online catalog of plans. Stock plan catalogs usually give you
nothing more than a floor plan and a sketch of the front of the house.
We are going to try and give you more information so you can have a better
idea of what the houses are like. More information, better decisions.
Info: This
is information about what is included with the plans, answers to common
questions, and the details of the plan license terms. Lots of dry reading,
we will try to keep it interesting.
Order:
Here you will find pricing, directions on how to order, payment methods,
and downloadable order formwork.
